What Is a Low Vision Assessment?
A low vision assessment is a specialized eye examination designed for people whose vision cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery.
Low vision can be caused by several eye conditions, including:
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- Retinal disease
- Vision loss following injury or illness
During a low vision assessment, your optometrist focuses on understanding how your vision loss affects everyday activities such as reading, recognizing faces, using digital devices, or navigating safely.
Your appointment may include:
- Detailed evaluation of your remaining vision
- Functional vision testing for everyday tasks
- Discussion of lifestyle needs and goals
- Recommendations for visual aids and assistive devices
Our goal is to maximize your usable vision and help you continue to perform daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
Tools & Technology to Support Independence
Low vision care often involves specialized tools and technologies that help patients make the most of their remaining sight.
Depending on your needs, your optometrist may recommend a variety of low vision aids, including:
Magnification devices
Handheld magnifiers, stand magnifiers, or electronic magnification tools that make reading easier.
Digital assistive technology
Devices and apps that enlarge text, increase contrast, or convert text to speech.
Specialized lighting solutions
Enhanced lighting can improve visibility and reduce eye strain during everyday tasks.
Adaptive visual aids
Tools designed to support hobbies, reading, computer use, and other daily activities.
Our optometrists work closely with patients to identify solutions that are practical, comfortable, and suited to their lifestyle.
Insurance Coverage & Provincial Funding
Coverage for low vision services may vary depending on your situation and available health programs.
In Alberta, certain low vision services and assistive devices may be eligible for provincial funding programs or insurance support. Some extended health plans may also provide partial reimbursement for low vision assessments or visual aids.
At Acuity Eye Care, our team can help patients understand available coverage options and guide them through the process of accessing funding or benefits where applicable.
If you have questions about coverage or eligibility, our staff will be happy to discuss your options during your appointment.
Community Support & Resources
Low vision care often involves collaboration with community organizations that specialize in vision rehabilitation and accessibility support.
When appropriate, our optometrists may work alongside organizations such as CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) to help patients access additional resources, training, and services.
These resources may include:
• Vision rehabilitation programs
• Orientation and mobility training
• Technology support and training
• Community programs and support services
By working together with trusted community partners, we aim to provide comprehensive support that helps patients maintain independence and quality of life.
At Acuity Eye Care, we proudly support patients living with low vision assessments available at our Grande Banks, and Dawson Creek locations.
