Supporting Children’s Vision and Learning in Alberta
Healthy vision plays an important role in a child’s early learning and development. The Eye See… Eye Learn® program is a province-wide initiative designed to help ensure young children begin school with the vision they need to succeed.
At Acuity Eye Care, we support this program by providing comprehensive eye exams for kindergarten-aged children and helping eligible students receive their first pair of prescription glasses when needed.
Our optometrists are committed to supporting families and children through this important program across communities in Alberta. In Alberta, the Eye Learn programme is avaliable to children in Kindergarten. Alberta Health and BC MSP partially cover eye exams.

What Is the Eye See… Eye Learn® Program?
The Eye See… Eye Learn® program is an initiative supported by the Alberta Association of Optometrists that encourages parents to schedule a comprehensive eye exam for their child during the year they begin kindergarten.
If a child requires prescription glasses following their exam, the program helps cover the cost of a pair of basic eyeglasses.
The goal of the program is to ensure children have the clear vision they need to learn, read, and participate confidently in school.
Many children may not realize they have a vision problem, and early detection can help address issues before they affect classroom performance or development.
Why Children’s Eye Exams Are Important Before Starting School
Vision plays a major role in how children learn. In fact, much of the information children receive in the classroom is visual.
Undetected vision problems can sometimes lead to challenges with:
• Reading and comprehension
• Concentration and classroom participation
• Hand-eye coordination
• Visual tracking while reading or writing
A comprehensive eye exam can help detect common childhood vision conditions such as:
• Nearsightedness (myopia)
• Farsightedness (hyperopia)
• Astigmatism
• Eye coordination or focusing problems
By identifying and correcting vision concerns early, children can begin their educational journey with greater confidence and visual comfort.

During your child’s appointment, our optometrists will perform a comprehensive pediatric eye exam that evaluates both vision and eye health. If your child qualifies for the program and requires glasses, we will guide you through the process of selecting frames and lenses included through the initiative.

Who Is Eligible for Eye See… Eye Learn®?
The program is designed for children entering kindergarten in Alberta who have not yet received glasses through the initiative.
Eligibility typically includes:
• Children enrolled in kindergarten in Alberta
• A comprehensive eye exam completed with a participating optometrist
• Prescription glasses recommended following the exam
If your child qualifies, the program helps cover a pair of basic eyeglasses, helping families access vision correction when it is needed most.
