What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam at Acuity Eye Care goes beyond simply checking your vision. Our optometrists assess your overall eye health, visual function, and prescription using advanced diagnostic technology and personalized care.

Your eye exam may include:

Vision & Prescription Assessment

We evaluate refractive errors to determine whether glasses or contact lenses are needed and ensure your prescription provides clear, comfortable vision.

Binocular Vision Testing

Your optometrist assesses how well your eyes work together to support comfortable focusing, depth perception, and visual coordination.

Detailed Eye Health Evaluation

Using specialized diagnostic equipment, we examine the structures of your eyes to detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic eye disease.

Personalized Eye Care Guidance

Following your exam, your optometrist will provide tailored recommendations to support long-term eye health, including advice on eyewear, eye protection, and lifestyle habits that benefit your vision.

If you would like to add a contact lens fitting, this can be scheduled with your exam for an additional fee. Please let our team know when booking your appointment as additional time is required.

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

Regular eye exams are an essential part of maintaining healthy vision even if you aren’t experiencing noticeable symptoms. Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause immediate changes in vision.

Most patients should schedule an eye exam every one to two years, depending on age, health factors, and risk indicators.

Children (18 and under)

Regular eye exams support healthy visual development and can help identify issues that may impact learning or screen use.

Adults (19–64)

Routine eye exams every one to two years help maintain clear vision and detect early signs of eye disease.

Seniors (65+)

Annual eye exams are recommended to monitor age-related eye health and detect conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.

If you notice blurred vision, headaches, eye strain, floaters, flashes, or sudden changes in vision, we recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as possible.

Does My Provincial Healthcare Cover My Eye Exam?

Alberta Health Care covers comprehensive eye exams for:

  • Children aged 18 and under

  • Seniors aged 65 and older

These groups are typically eligible for one comprehensive eye exam per year through the provincial health program.

Adults between 19 and 64 years old may have partial or full coverage through extended health benefits or private insurance plans.

At Acuity Eye Care, we provide direct billing with many major insurance providers, helping simplify the payment process whenever possible. Our team will be happy to help you understand your coverage when booking your appointment.
